Bandwidth throttling
Throttling may be used to limit the bandwidth usage when you are approaching your transfer limit.
Throttling may not be a good idea if you depend on web traffic for your business. If your pages are slow to load, if visitors cannot access your pages they will leave and move on to another site.
If you have a lot of free content, throttling can be useful for keeping your hosting budget within a certain amount.
These are some of the throttling options available:
- Limit incoming requests
- You can limit the number of incoming requests by specifying the idle time between requests. This will cause incoming requests to be delayed by a specified amount of time if too many are arriving at once.
- Limit on data transfer within a certain time period
- If your website experiences overload during certain periods of time, you can limit the site access to provide for better functionality and performance.
- Limit the number of requests for a certain file
- You may want to do this with some large files like videos or PDF documents to avoid extensive bandwidth usage.
- Cap speed of transfers at a certain level
- This can be used as an alternative to the option above. Instead of limiting the number of requests you can simply limit the download speed to ensure that files are accessible at all times.
Does all of the above sound too technical? Or perhaps you cannot think of a situation where you would really want to limit your bandwidth usage? We suggest simply getting a bigger hosting package right in the beginning. It won't cost you much more and you will avoid any potential bandwidth issues.
